Siim Kabrits, one of the driving forces behind the non-profit group Organic Estonia and successful exporter of blueberries to Asia, founded Chaga Health in 2014. He was soon joined by his aunt Anu Adermann, a former ENT doctor and ex-CEO of a medical company.
Estonia is a perfect home for chaga mushrooms. Forests cover half of the small country, 1.3 million hectares of which are certified organic. Chaga Health is on personal terms with every Estonian farmer and forester who helps harvest the mushrooms, herbs and honey. The same goes for organic aloe, which is harvested by hand by Enzo Agileri's family farm in northern Italy. The brand prides itself on full traceability: every ingredient we choose is traceable to its collection point.
Estonia is a small country of 4.5 million hectares, of which 1.3 million are organic forests. That's where chaga mushrooms and coarse pine buds are hand-picked for elixir. Tuhalaane farm, owned by Arvi Salujärv, is one of the oldest farms working with them. Arvi picks pine buds of 2-3 cm in May and June, leaving half of each tree unplucked. When harvesting chaga, Arvi picks only mushrooms that are at least five years old. The picking areas in Viljandi, Põlva, Valga and Võru counties are controlled by the Estonian Agricultural Registers and Information Board.
