Maitake, Oak Hare or Grifola Frondosa?

Maitake has many different names. Maitake is also called Eikhaas in the Netherlands and Belgium. The name Maitake comes from the Japanese word 'mai' (dancing) and take (mushroom). Freely translated, it means 'dancing mushroom'. The name comes from a legend that says people who found the mushroom in the wild did a dance of joy because the Maitake was so special and because of its positive properties for health. Its Latin name is Grifola Frondosa, which means 'full of leaves'. When you see the Maitake mushroom in the wild, you immediately see where this name comes from. The Maitake appears to be full of leaves.

Oak hare mushroom in the wild

During the autumn months and sometimes as early as late summer, you can encounter Maitake or Oak Hare in the wild. You can recognise Maitake by large clusters at the base of living oak trees and on their stumps. Hence the Dutch name Eikhaas. Maitake is a hole-shaped fungus whose fruiting bodies grow in large bundles. The bundles can sometimes grow 50 to 60 cm in diameter. The mushroom varies greatly in colour from pure white to brownish-grey. The hats lie on top of each other like a mountain of overlapping leaves.

The special effects of Maitake Mushrooms

Now that you already know a bit more about the background of the Maitake, let's take a closer look at the Maitake effect. Traditional Chinese medicine uses this mushroom as an adaptogen; it works to support stress and balance the body. In modern medicine, people use Maitake or Oak Hare mainly for its stimulating effect and resistance support. Maitake is a highly nutritious mushroom and naturally rich in minerals such as potassium, copper and zinc. It is a bomb of vitamins. It contains vitamin D, B1, B2, B3, phospholipids and numerous amino acids. The mushroom contains a lot of water-soluble fibre and is very low in calories. An important antioxidant from the Maitake is the powerful L-ergothionein, specialised in protecting our liver function. In addition, the Maitake mushroom contains unique beta glucans. Glucans provide natural and healthy cytokine production. Cytokines come into play in supporting your immunity.
