Biodegradability

Silicates and soda ash are mineral substances that do not require further degradation in nature. Citrate, a substance found in plants, animals and humans, is completely broken down by nature within 2 to 3 days, thanks to naturally occurring micro-organisms. Sodium percarbonate decomposes into mineral soda, water and oxygen during the washing and bleaching process, leaving the dishwasher in a state that requires no further decomposition; i.e. bleaching and decomposition are one and the same process. The process of producing sugar surfactants and sulphated castor oil involves extracting components from the plant raw materials starch, sugar and fat, but retaining their natural structure. This makes it quite easy for microorganisms to break down these surfactants very quickly for 100%. Citrate, carboxymethylinulin, tetrasodium glutamate diacetate, sodium gluconate, surfactant sugars and sulphated castor oil are classified as readily biodegradable according to the OECD.

Sonett Dishwasher tablets are suitable for septic tanks and filtration systems.

Origin and properties of Sonett Dishwasher Tablets ingredients

The main active ingredients in Sonett's tablets for dishwashers are sodium carbonate, silicates and sulphated castor oil. Silicates are obtained by fusing sand with sodium carbonate and, thanks to their alkalinity, are able to modify grease on dishes by saponification, making it water-soluble. These silicates swell stuck food residues, loosening them. Sodium carbonate, made from table salt and lime, disperses the fat into fine droplets, supporting the fat-dissolving properties of the silicates.

Adding small amounts of sulphated castor oil lowers the surface tension of water, making it easier for dirt to be wet by water. Sulphated castor oil, also known as turkey red oil, is obtained by the direct reaction of castor oil with sulphuric acid. In addition, the tablets contain bleaching oxygen (sodium percarbonate). During the washing cycle, sodium percarbonate releases oxygen in addition to water and sodium carbonate. The oxygen released in the process serves to remove tea and coffee residues from glasses and cups.

Sodium percarbonate is a molecular complex obtained by adsorbing hydrogen peroxide to sodium carbonate. Citrate, obtained by fermenting sugary by-products such as molasses, is added to dishwasher detergent to bind limescale in the dishwashing water and protect the machine from deposits. Because many dishwashers still feed too much lime-laden water despite built-in ion exchangers (water softeners), citrate is enhanced by the lime-binding properties of sodium gluconate, carboxymethylinulin and tetrasodium glutamate diacetate. Sodium gluconate is the sodium salt of gluconic acids that occurs naturally in honey and fruits. Carboxymethyl inulin is manufactured by carboxymethylation of starch inulin, extracted from chicory roots. Tetrasodium glutamate diacetate comprises 86% from renewable natural products containing starch and sugar.

What should not go in the dishwasher?

According to the dishwasher manufacturer's instructions, crystal, antique porcelain, aluminium pans, silverware and cutlery with wooden or glued handles should not go in the dishwasher. It is better to wash these with dishwashing detergent.
